This company started in the Bible Belt, where it was common for ALL stores to be closed on Sundays. I remember when I moved to the South from the North when I was a kid, and I couldn't believe the whole town just shut down on Sundays.
Chick-fil-A never changed this practice, and considers it a part of their corporate culture. Not my cup o' tea, but I'm sure the employees are greatful.
From the company's FAQ:
Q: Why is Chick-fil-A closed on Sunday?
A: Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, made the decision to close on Sunday in 1946 when he opened his original restaurant, the Dwarf House(r), in Hapeville, Georgia. He has often shared that his decision was as much practical as spiritual. Operating a 24-hour a day business left him exhausted. Being cloased on Sunday allowed him time to recover physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And, of course, being closed on Sunday aligns with his personal religious convictions and beliefs.
To explain this at our restaurants, a sign states, "Since 1946, it has been our nationwide policy to be closed on Sunday. Thank you for your patronage, and we look forward to serving you Monday through Saturday."

The owners are religious, and they give their employees that day off to worship and spend time with family. It's not a "mall" thing, because not ALL Chic Fil As are in malls. We have them as stand alone stores here and THEY are closed on Sundays as well. And why wouldn't the mall ones be open on Sundays when THE MALL is open on Sundays, and as far as I have EVER seen, the mall is NOT slow on Sunday. It is based on religion.

For Truett Cathy, it seemed like such a simple idea: make a sandwich using chicken. But oh how his little idea took off. From modest beginnings in a tiny Georgia eatery almost sixty years ago, Chick-fil-A® has grown into one of the largest privately owned restaurant chains in the nation. Yet, from the beginning, the first priority for Truett and Chick-fil-A has never been just to serve chicken. It's to serve a higher calling.
Our official statement of corporate purpose says that we exist "to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A." That's why we invest in scholarships, character-building programs for kids, foster homes and other community services. Come to think of it, it's also not a bad motive for striving to serve a really, really good sandwich.

I thought it was because they were trying to tick me off since I usually only got to the mall that has them on Sundays. They are the only one closed in the Food Court so the coupons they mail me are worthless. Their prices are so inflated it doesn't make any sense to go there anyway so being closed is not a biggie.
In the mall they do not have a sign explaining their policy or giving any reason for not being open while the mall is open.

They post it in the lobby on a BIG sign. They close so that the staff can attend church and be with their families. Thank you.
ALSO. the original location of Chick-filet was in a state that had "blue laws" circa 1950's-70's which were specific for retail and restaurants operations being limited or closed on all Sundays and legal holidays.
We are in Texas and most of them were lifted in the late 70's and early 80's. We can remember the Mall being closed on Sundays. OH the HORROR of it all.

They are a Southern based company that believes in giving their employees time to spend with their families....so they are always closed on Sundays. It's actually pretty neat, how many companies do that now-a-days.

Most likely due to religion. A lot of Chinese restaurants are also closed on Sundays.
