In the days of the ancients, when the Earth was the center of the universe, the Sun, the Moon and all the planets were thought to orbit the Earth in the same way. The Sun and Moon were special cases because they were so big and bright, but the mechanism was the same.
Nowadays, we define things a little differently. A star is a gas ball that gives off its own light. A planet is a very large, round rock or gas ball that doesn't give off light and usually orbits a star. A moon is a rock that orbits a planet.
If a "moon" is NOT orbiting a planet, it's an asteroid, a comet, or a "dwarf planet". If a "planet" is not orbiting a star, it would probably be called a rogue planetoid or something (but we haven't seen many of these). It's not so much about what it is as how it moves.

They are two separate entities, though neither of them are planets. The sun is a star and the moon is a moon satelliting around a planet (Earth) . The Earth is a planet.

The two are separate objects. The moon is a satellite, and the sun is a star.
