The pop ups tell me to download registry cleaner or else and also to run registry update or else data loss and corruption or system failure. They pop up every few minutes. 3 different messages. I just click x. How can I stop these? Also do I need a firewall? Any suggestions for a free download on this too? This is all very distracting.

I had a similar problem with pop up messages like that. I downloaded "Windows Defender", it got rid of them and has worked great ever since.

Sounds like you may have an older version of Windows (pre XP SP2). These type of popups often exploit the Messenger Service in your Windows OS, which after XP SP2 is disabled by default.

Do these popups say "Messenger Service" in the title bar at times?

A popup blocker "thingy" will be of no help in this case.

You have 2 choices to end the problem.

1. You can disable and stop Messenger Service by typing "services msc." (without the(""s) into your Run Box and disabling and stopping Messenger Service.

OR

2. You can use the free utility called Shoot The Messenger to automatically disable this unnecessary service.

Please note that Windows Messenger Service is not the same as any Instant Messenger program that you may have on your computer. Disabling it will not cause you to lose any IM functionality that you may have.

Good luck

Hi pvcuervoqueen,

AVG is for viruses, not popups. You need to install a pop up blocker.

Go here for a selection of free and pay ones - http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=pop%20up%20blocker&tag=srch.

Also, your browser may have one built in. You didn't say what browser you were using but if it is IE make sure the pop up blocker is turned on.

If you aren't already running antispyware you should do so. At least get AdAware and run it every week. It is free here - http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10639408.html?tag=lst-0-1

You never get the whole program when you get the free addition. If you're going to get a firewall, you need to go out and buy it then install it. They aren't that expensive and they will help you a lot.

Do a free spyware/malware/virus scan off the web...go to bitdefender.com or ewido.net and select the Scan button. Popups are usually caused by some kind of spyware...

Firewalls do not prevent popups. I suggest a good spyware sweeper and popup blocker. Get spybot search & destroy from download.com. Any popup blocker should be fine, yahoo toolbar works well.

For your internet browser, use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Since I've been using it, I haven't gotten one pop-up! I love it.
