I'm not even getting into how overhyped and overprotected Nash is in Phoenix. He has got to be hands down the worst defender in MVP history. Since when did NBA select MVP that doesnt play defense. Comments?

Wow. Im called stupid. I still cant think of any MVP in history of NBA that defends "worse" than Steve Nash. Yes, you can say Steve Nash plays below average defense and gets helped out by referees when they call charges on him. That still doesnt compare to how past MVPs play on defensive end. He is not even close.

To that guy -AdamC?- who called me a retard and said Wes Unseld and Dave Cowens have less steals than Steve Nash? You really have no clue dude. Your personal attacks mean nothing. You write long post of "stats" but nothing backs it up. Some people really have no clue about Steve Nash. This really shows.

Yep AdamC way to compare Nash's steals with PF/Cs. You really have no clue dude and you dare to call me a retard. You obviously know nothing about stats. Steve Nash's defense statistically ranks below average among PGs. And I'm being nice when I say below average.

Steve Nash
1997-2006 career steals average = 0.8 steals per game
2005-2006 steals average = 0.9 steals per game (where he won 2 MVPs)
1997-2006 career blocks average = 0.1 blocks per game
2005-2006 Steve Nash averaged 3.4 turnovers per game
I know people get defensive about Steve Nash but numbers dont support any of the stuff you just raved about him. Nash is a terrible defender, both statistically and skillwise.
Sorry that is the truth. Hate to break it to ya.

Defense? in the NBA? how dare you!
I am confused by people ... first of all, I don’t think a players defensive skills are given that much thought in an MVP vote, some, but not much ... they have a separate award for defensive player of the year, and no, Nash wont win that ... second, I would guess you don’t see Steve play much ... he out hustles, outplays, and out-talents guys with twice the physical skills ... and, in Phoenix, the best defense is a good offence ... so his defensive skills are relative to his teams needs ... in other words, he doesn’t have to defend much to help his team ... and MVP is about a players value
They need to make a new award ... MABB- most amazing bling bling ... to satisfy all these kids (like you) that don’t understand al the nuances of the game, and the skill and patience it takes
Is Steve Nash the worst defender in MVP history? ... prolly
Is Steve Nash the most talented player in the league? ... No
Is he the single most important player to his team in the league? ... No question he is ... and that’s why he won those MVP's
Ps. ok, now im really confused ... if yer going off stats Steve is in the top 10 in defensive stats for a PG ... and you call out a guy for compairing a PG steals to a PF ... Shawn Marion is a PF and he is 2nd in th league in steals right now ... I dont get your point ... ?

He's not even that bad a defender, he still gets 1-2 steals a game, but the off-zone the Suns play doesn't really allow him to be a shut down PG. Barbosa came into the league a strong defender and he doesn't look much better than Nash.
And what PG do you know that shut down Steve Nash? He might not score alot all the time, but he's always getting his 12 assists per game. Jason Kidd couldn't even shut Nash and the Suns down and he's the best defensive PG in the league!
Tell you what, next time you watch ESPN or TNT or ABC or anything, you listen to see if any NBA analysts say Steve Nash doesn't deserve to be MVP because he "doesn't play defense".
Nash proved to be a better contender when the Suns struggled without him. Who else deserves it?
The Lakers and Cavs aren't winning, so Kobe and Lebron can't win. Gilbert Arenas doesn't play defense either, and more importantly, doesn't share the ball. He doesn't help his teamates (as much as he should/could). Steve Nash is the catalyst of the Suns.
Tim Duncan probably deserves it, but his numbers are a bit down. They've been steadily picking up though, and if they can go on a run, he'd be a top candidate.
Dirk Nowitski, I think, right now deserves it over Nash, but there are still alot of games to play, so we'll see what happens.
But, please stop knocking something you obviously have no clue about.
PS - JJJJJ is 100% right.
PPS - We can just "say" that? Unlike you, we have factual information to back it up.
Wes Unseld in 69 and Dave Cowens in 73 both had less steals per game in their MVP seasons than Steve Nash. There isn't anything on charges, obviously, as its an unrecorded stat. Cowens also had less blocks per game than Nash, but both numbers are negligable (less than .25 a game).
Nash also gets about 3 defensive rebounds per game, which isn't shoddy by any stretch of the imagination.
PPS - Nash's takeaway/giveaway ratio might have been negative, but his assist/turnover ratio was highest in the NBA and turnovers are NOT a defensive stat. Has there ever been an MVP with more steals than turnovers???
PPPS - I didn't call you a retard, I only said don't say things you don't know about. But it's ok, thanks for proving me right.

can't think of a worse defender in the league let alone MVP history
this guy let a 3rd string point guard torch him for a triple double last year
he's not strong enough to handle a guy in the post and gets faked out by the basic of moves
whoever thinks steals rate the defender is an idiot. You can suicide steal every possession get a couple a game but get burned 30 times
If you think that's good defense, you must be a sun fan

Come on dude, give him more credit than that!
Look at his size and his athletic ability, it's not his fault that he wasn't born as big and tall as some of the better defenders.
He still does good at drawing charges and he gets steals, so stop hating on what might just be one of the best PURE point-guards in a long time!
EDIT: the guy's answer above me is EXACTLY RIGHT! Listen to him, he knows what he's talking about!

Another good reason that Nash DOES play decent defense is his team defense abilities.
he leads the league in charges.
CHARGES, he's barely 6ft tall and he leads the lead in charges. He drew 3 alone against elton brand on tuesday.

His Steals per game, and steals per minute beg to differ -- he is a good defender, and at times overlooked by people who don't know the game but think they do (see here). He's not a great defender, but to say that he is not a good defender is atrocious.
