I have spent many years doing "Public Speaking" and have become quite good at it now and actually Enjoy it!

The first thing you need to do forget all that garbage about imagining people in underwear and all those other "myths". They are foolish and will do nothing to help you!

What you really need is to be prepared. When you are prepared, you will be less nervous and you will deliver a very good speech!

If you have a speech to give in class, you practice, practice and practice. You rehearse what you are going to say after preparing a well thought out paper. Go over it many times so that you build your confidence level. Do not try to memorize because you may forget parts of it, however, the more familiar you are with your material, the more natural and spontaneous you will be able to deliver that material.

By doing this, you will become much more confident in yourself, and therefore the people in the room will not matter to you, because ultimately only YOU are the expert on the material that you have researched, written, and delivered.

Eye contact is important when speaking to an audience, whether it is a group of classmates or not. You should always make eye contact and spread it evenly over the room. Don't worry if you can't do that at first. Natural gestures are also very important. As you get better, this skill will come too.

So first thing is to really know your material, then practice, build your confidence and then learn how to incorporate natural eye contact and gestures.

Best of Luck to you!!!

Put the paper down so it doesn't shake and show your nervousness, take a deep breath and collect yourself. You'll just have to bite the bullet and do it. Remember everyone else is going to have to take their turn at it. Repetitively standing up in front of an audience helps in time. Knowing your material inside and backward will help with fumbling and forgetting, this helps me best. Public speaking is one of the worst fears people have that they never get over. I had an instructor/employee that quit because it was harder for him to stand up in front of a small group of students than it was for him to run into a burning building (he was also a volunteer firefighter).

I was just the same way when I was at school, read over your speech the following night and make it easy to read and be positive about yourself. Don't be scared and just talk. Don't apologize for making a mistakes or being nervous good luck.
