The key person was a small time gambler named Joseph Sullivan. He initiated the plan. He then got bankrolled by Bill Burns, Hall Chase and a couple others. But the big money came from Arnold Rothstein. Please do yourself a favor and rent "Eight Men Out", one of the best baseball movies ever.
Joe Jackson did not fix the series. He was just one of the players on the team at the time. He actually played very well, hitting a robust .375.

People, get your facts right...Shoeless Joe Jackson did not fix the WS in 1919. How does someone throwing a series bat .375 (highest on the team, besides a DH), while having his team's only home run and having the most RBI's and runs on his team?
Go to the site below for all the information you need - http://www.blackbetsy.com/joefacts.htm
After reading this, send an e-mail to Selig, stating that Shoeless Joe's ban should be removed.

I have read the awnsers and they are right about Burns and Rothchild , and the players who were banned. One thing that has been left out is that the White sox owner, Charlie Cominsky, also had a big part in it because he was a misery penny pincher of a owner. Dickie Kerr, which was one of the innocent White Sox actually left the major leagues a couple of years later to pitch for an industrial team because he made more money. If he had been a little more reasonable in his buisness dealings, it might have never happened

It's a fascinating story about 8 team members charged in the conspiracy. One teammate was not in on the fix because the other players didn't like him. Read the details in Sporting News: http://www.sportingnews.com/archives/worldseries/1919.html

Actually, two nobodies put the wheels in motion. I forget their names but one was a has been fighter and one was a down on his luck gambler. They didn't have the "dough" to back the betting or pay off the players,so they turned to a big time fixer and gambler named Arnold Rothstien.
