It is very frustrating to realize that Hitler did not need to be a jerk. One reason so many Germans accepted his leadership when it got bad was that he had been a reasonably good leader before starting his wars--with some huge, notable exceptions--the anti semitism and police state suppression was always evil, wrong, and unnecessary. The German economy was a disaster during the worldwide depression of the late 1920's and 1930's, and the Nazis overcame it like the US did, with massive public employment programs. Germany hosted the Olympics, that employed many people, it brought in visitors and their money. The Autobahn projects employed thousands and built needed infrastructure which still serves Germany well today. And of course the military buildup provided employment, as well. In the US massive public works programs built projects like the original highway system, Hoover Dam, Grand Coulee Hydroelectric, the TVA, the Golden Gate Bridge, and many, many others. So the key was massive public building projects, both there and in the US. The military buildup produced no long term economic benefits, but a good highway system, or water system, or electric generation system pays dividends long after the work is done.

By ignoring their "obligations" and abrogating the treaties they signed after World War I.

The Nazis decided to stop making "reparation" payments, which allowed the German Government to institute actual economic reform programs.

You have to remember, the same sort of programs were also developed in the United States under President Franklin Roosevelt - the PWA, the Peace Corp, the TVA - all designed to get millions of people working again.

Germany started by inflating their currency in an attempt to inflate away the reparations pushed down after WWI.

Ironically, this helped shield them against the global deflation that caused the Great Depression.

Britain also recognized the deflationary pressures and didn't have nearly as rough time as the US did.
