PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games right from the start.

X-Box 360 cant play X-Box games, though with downloads you can download from microsoft which will let you play some certain x-box games.

The PS3 is fully backwards compatible with all PS1 and 2 games, although there are a few issues with some games.

Xbox 360 is not fully backwards compatible because they did not put in a chip that allows Xbox games to be read from the hardware. Since they use software emulation, only a handful of Xbox games are available for play on the 360.

The 360 requires that you download patches for the games to play them on the 360.

The PS3 requires the same. However, note that any game that requires a special controller, such as Dance Revolution, Karaoke Revolution and Guitar Hero WILL NOT play on the PS3 - there is no where to plug in the controllers!! Nice Job Sony...NOT!

Ive got a Wii, 360 and a PS3. the PS3 is gathering dust. I play Wii and 360 constantly. PS3 has no good games right now, and anything coming out is being brought to 360 as well!

Yes. Both can play earlier gen. games. I don't know about the ps3 specifically but the xbox360 does not yet have full compatibility with regular xbox games. They release a list every now and then with all the new compatibile xbox games that you can play on the 360. I imagine the ps3 will work pretty similar to this, or perhaps it has full backwards compatibility, hence one of the many reasons why it came out so late.

YES PS3 can play the *majority* of PS2 and PS1 games. It is thought that a handfull of back titles will not work, but these are normally games that recieved very little public or critical attention i.e they were rubbish.

It does seem however that a lot of the older games may run with slight glitches. Here is a good sight for the info you may require;

Likewise for the Xbox brand, the 360 WILL play original Xbox games. Grab yourslef a copy of Xbox Shenmue - money well spent!! FINGERs XD that Ico, Rez, Shadow Of The Collusus etc will work on a PS3 if i eventually get one!

Xbox360 can play a list of xbox games, not all mind you. You can go to xboxs website and they will have a list of what is currently compatible. They are always updating that list via firmware upgrades as well.

PS3 should be backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 but not with everything, check sony's website they should have a similar list like xbox.

ps3 has backward compatibility. the only thing u have to do is before playing either a ps or ps2 game u have to create an internal memory card in order to save ps or ps2 games progress. and don't expect super high quality graphics when u play old games its the same as if u were playing on an actual ps or ps2. im playing FFVII and it works perfectly on my ps3 :D
