People often say that it was the Mongol Empire that was the largest ever, but it comes a poor second to the mighty British Empire.
At its peak, the Mongol Empire held 33 million square kilometres of land and around 100 million, whereas the British Empire held over 38 million square kilometres and around 458 million people.

It must have been the Mongols who conquered the Chinese Empire. Kublai Khan completed the conquest of the Chinese Empire in 1279. Other large empires that existed like the Roman, Ottoman, or British Empires were conquests of many nations not one existing empire.
