Most of them have done drugs or were suicidal. Why did they become comedians?

I wonder where you get your statistics. In any event, the reason anyone is depressed is because they have developed a habit of thinking negatively. In this case they might need to feel accepted and appreciated by the audience. Thinking negatively about this would cause them to attract rejection. There is a great sequence in the film The Secret which is available online which depicts the true story of the life of a stand-up comedian and office worker who managed to turn his life around completely by changing the thoughts he focused on. I don`t know how to tell you this without it looking like spam, however I only appreciate this film and I know it has helped many people see a way out.

I would not agree that its just stand up comedians. People in general who think their funny can be depressed as well. There are alot of people who took important jobs and probably have done drugs ar were suicidal before hand. Take the conrol tower guy who direct's traffic fot air. They found that he was doing coke while on the job. Hope my next fight is a safe landing.
Take care. Have a nice weekend.

I guess they use comedy as a shield so others don't get to know their actual feelings, like a defense mechanism. Well, I'm no expert.

I think that it is a way of healing for them. When they can make others laugh, it makes them feel better.
