Absolutely.. As a FireFighter I personally worked beside 2 women on my shift. They are just as capable if not more than the guys. I've found that when it comes to comforting and family, or working on a medical emergency the women are able to empathize a little easier as well as they have the knowledge we all have and are able to put what's going on in common term. When it comes to lifting a heavy patient/victim it's just about all technique. The women have mastered the technique, because the don't always have the brut force to get the job done. I would be just as proud to welcome a women into the brother/sisterhood of the industry.

I think anyone who can perform the requirements of a job is eligible for that job. In an extremely physical job such as firefighting, anyone who can meet the physical requirements WITHOUT getting accomodations (for example, women having to carry less weight, or carry weight a shorter distance) should be considered as a viable candidate for the job regardless of gender.

Yes. I am a Fire Chief and I encourage women to test for career positions and also to volunteer. Although of late it appears less women are interested than in the 1970's when Emergency was on TV and the big push for women in the Fire Service and EMS began.

Its interesting that you use the word "allowed." Once women are declared by law as having equal opportunities as men, then the answer rests on the individual woman.

Have you heard about the all woman peacekeeping force from India in Liberia, West Africa? In my opinion the world should see more benefits from this.

We are having "battles" in my country to get this right for women, since they are not allowed too.
But i believe that if the woman is strong enough and love it too much, she has the absolute right to chose what fits her.

ALL the best
