So, I have a bunch of old LP's that probably will never see professional release on cd and I would like to connect my turntable up to my laptop and burn the lp's onto cd+r's so i can have something good to listen to while driving around or working. What exactly am I goit to need to do this? Are there any good websites (with pictures pref.) that can show me how to do this and not charge me. I realize I'll have to buy a cable, but do i need any kind of special software to do this? My laptop has Windows XP if that helps. Thanks in advance for any help

To hook up a turntable to a computer, (Or a receiver that doesn't have phono inputs.) you'll need a phono preamp to convert the signal from from phono level to line level.

You will also need an 1/8" stereo mini plug to RCA jack "Y" adapter. You can get the "Y" adapter at almost any computer store, audio store, Radio Shack, music store & most big box stores like Wal-Mart. It looks like this:
Philips Miniplug to Left / Right RCA Jack Stereo "Y" Adapter $11.83
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3913841

- Hook the turntable's grounding wire to the preamp.
- Hook the turntable's outputs to the preamp's inputs.
- Hook the Y adapter's 1/8" mini plug to your computer's line in jack & the Y adapter's two RCA plugs to the preamp's output.

There's also this option, which was mentioned in the post above mine:
Numark TTUSB Belt-Drive Turntable with USB Audio Interface $170

"Pack includes audacity software and all the necessary cables to connect with your computer and stereo playback system. Audacity lets you record at a high speed and return your music to the original playback speed; clean up the sound by removing clicks, pops, and other noise; and export to WAV and MP3."

About a week and a half ago I saw in a newspaper an advertisement for a converter to make LP songs into digital files. It looked like a record player with an output cable. It cost around $170.00 though. I googled it, but couldn't come up with the exact item, but the one listed below might work. As far as a free item, I'm afraid I don't have a perfect solution. I asked a friend about this, and he tried to explain to me how to go about connected the turntable to a computer via and auxilliary cable. I will ask him to explain in better detail and will edit my response when I find out!
