i think it says that we have moved on... that we can recognize the more recent heroes among us and not simply cling to the past. for example, if i rename "audie murphy highway" to "martin luther king, jr. highway," what am i saying?
i am saying that the contribution martin luther king, jr. made is at least as great as the contribution audie murphy made. perhaps king's contribution is not as great as the contribution made by 100,000's of soldiers... but the highway wasn't named "veteran's highway."
now, when i DO rename "veteran's highway" after king, what i am saying is that i revere individual heroism more than i do communal heroism.
i am also saying that i revere a man who takes on enemies of the constitution who live WITHIN this country more than i revere people who fight against enemies of the constitution who might, possibly, some day in the future, attempt to invade us physically.

Wherever you you see a mlk street, you know it's a place to avoid. Bum's, beggars, prostitutes. It never fails, just notice next time you drive.
