I missed my parents and friends, I was 1,100 miles away from home. Missed them a LOT!!! However, you make friends. Its funny, but the friends you make in college are in a lot of ways the best, closest friends you ever have. Simple stuff like all night bull sessions in the dorm, goofing around in the student union, working on papers together, trips, it all adds up to a great experience. A piece of advice--a lot of colleges have set a minefield of "flunkout" courses to rid themselves of young students. These classes are always difficult and almost impossible, but they always fulfill some basic education requirement. The trick is to avoid them. There are always other classes that fulfill the basic education requirement; you must find out 1) if there are flunkout courses at your school and if so, 2) what they are and 3) what easier, more sensible courses can be substituted for them. In some cases, just taking a summer course at a community college will be sufficient, just transfer the grade. It can be anywhere--english, lit, science--but it must be avoided. Consider joining a sorority or a fraternity because older class people will know the ropes and can give helpful advice on this and many other subjects, though "greek" organizations tend to party too much. Anyway, you are going to enjoy the next few years. Have fun, but pay attention to your studies, too, keep your mind and your eyes open for interesting fields of study--these are in many ways the most interesting years of your life coming up. Enjoy!

I'm in Europe and I moved to another COUNTRY when I started college!! It was both scary and fun. Of course I missed my parents and sister, but nowadays the internet makes communications so much easier... if I had an urgent question or just needed to talk to people back home, I'd email them or go on aim/msn/icq. It takes time to adapt to a new environment.. how much time? that depends on the person.. in any case, moving to a new place is great experience! new places, new friends, new experiences.... Umm my first semesters in college were the hardest ones... once you survive the beginning, the rest flies by easier and so much faster. I wish you the best of luck this fall!! :) *hugz*

Good luck sweetie. The idea terrified me but I didn't end up going to college right out of high school and by the time I did, I was able to go locally.
It's a big life move for sure, but you'll be fine. I hope you enjoy the heck out of it and reach the goals you have set for yourself!

Yes it is scary for almost every one. It is the sense of not being in control or in a new environment that you are not comfortable with. You have to stare over with everything, friends, places to hang out, trying to fit in and so on. With missing every one that's why they have cell phones with national plans that are free min after 7 or 9 pm. Good luck on your adventure!

yes. but u eventually get used to it (missing parents, friends, etc) its a time to re-invent urself and have some fun with freedom. just dont let it all go to ur head and go crazy. join clubs, make new friends....just dont turn into a partier bc u will be back home and living under ur parents roof before u realize it.
