Sure, it is not really the employees personal property, it is the companies if it is mailed there. It is actually very very common for someone other then the addressee to open and sort the mail.

I know that opening any mail not addressed to you is a federal offense. Mail Tampering: Improper handling or opening of mail. However, if the mail was address to your job care of you then anyone in the office could open it. If they mail simply had your name and your office address, whoever opened your mail was in the wrong. But you can always let them know that if you pressed charges they could face up to 5 years in a federal prison. The 2nd link is the steps to file a complaint with the US Postal Service

it is not 'your mail.' Mail addressed to the company is assumed to be mail for that company.

In many companies the mail is opened before the person opening it even tries to figure out who it is for.

In fact this is the reason that most companies have post office boxes. Any mail with sensitive contents is sent to the post office box instead of the company's street address.

i think they do open your mails eventhough it is addressed to you.that doesn't make it right though.but its very subjective.they can give you tons of reasons/excuses on why your mail has already been open.they can say its for company's security purposes, they dont want you to pass any confidential information to outsiders etc.or they can say, they thought it was addressed to the company, and your name just happens to be there because you're handling that certain client/matter/etc.or they could just say they received the mail opened already.the list goes on and on.it can be intentional.and sometimes it can be due to a mistake.but like i said before,it doesn't make it right though.big companies do keep tabs on your personal e-mails and the letters you receive.but theres many to go through so maybe they dont really keep track of everyone unless they have reason to monitor you.what i can suggest is that if its personal in any form, give your personal address (be it e-mail or housing address).you just got to take care of yourself, because you should know by now that no one is going to do that for you.they're all too busy taking care of their own issues.

Yes. You should not be receiving personal mail at work. With the volume of mail that normally arrives at the workplace, the person attending mail doesn't have the time to read each envelope before slitting it open to determine if it is personal or business.

If they can keep tabs on your e-mail and internet usage, I am sure they can open your mail.
