i am having broadband installed soon and was wondering what speeds cat5e can handle really i am fine making up my own leads with rj45 connectors at each end but didnt know if i would need to go as high as cat6 or maybe even fibre because i know they will be using fibre to bring it into my house.

you dont mention if through phone or cable you are getting internet.
phone lines the speed will go slower the further away you are from a bt exchange ,but cable uses optic fibre cables which you dont lose speeds as much as phone line.
with phone line broadband best speeds is from the master socket normally the front door but this isnt always accessibal
best if needing an extension lead is either a extension socket put in by bt or an ethernet cable ,using a telephone extension cable will lose you even more speed.

if you are phoneline and get filter boxes make sure each telephone point gets one of these they help stop interference your provider should send you one or two

Cat5e cable will support 1000Mb transfer rate, so you have nothing to worry about.
