The signing bonus is the portion of your contact that you get right away for just singing the contract.

Example: A Quarterback signs a $50M/10Y contract with an $18M signing bonus.

Its pretty self explanatory...its a bonus the player receives for signing the contract. For example they can tell the player "hey, if you sign this we will give you 3million dollars that's not included in your salary".
