I am 6 months pregnant and will be stopping work soon and going on disability. I want to know if I am able to do some type of work from home to supplement my income while I am off? I will only be taking the normal 1 month before the due date and 6 weeks after and would love to have some kind of work to do at home while I am off, but don't want to jeopardize my disability payments....Help!!!!

No. You cannot collect unemployment or disability if you have another income. The point of disability is that you are unable to work because of a medical condition. And unemployment means that you would work, but you cannot find employment.

The only way you can do that is if you do it under the table, illegally and never claim the income on your taxes.

Thats a good way to make friendly with the IRS and their auditors.

You're extremely lucky to be getting disability. My company provides no maternity leave whatsoever...I don't get disability...and I don't qualify for FMLA (I've been there just shy of 1 year)...my leave is unprotected and unpaid...

Consider yourself extremely lucky to be getting anything...most women don't! Don't jeopardize your disability payments by trying to work from home and receive both payments...You're most certainly NOT allowed to do that...the whole point of disability is that you CANT work...

And when did taking an entire month off BEFORE you deliver become "the normal". I have to work until I literally go into labor!!!

You have it A LOT better than you even realize! Just be thankful with that!

The point of collecting disability is because you cannot work. You're disabled. If you can work at home and the boss will pay you for it, then work out a deal. If not, then accept the limitations, one or the other.

If word gets out around the office that you're double dipping, you're not going to have a whole lot of friends when you return.

No you can't. Unless you get paid under the table so that disability doesn't catch you. If you can work, then you can't collect disability. They will find out. Plus, you are going to be busy enough with your little one. Trust me, you don't think you will be but taking care of a newborn is a fulltime job in itself!!

Congratulations on your little one!

I honestly dont know why you are classed as disabled when you are pregnant. In Canada it is called maternity leave, you receive a percentage of what your income was.I believe you can be on that for a year, then its back to work.

Why don't you just work straight through? Obviously, you are able to..if you can work from home. That way, you won't have to worry about supplementing your income and cheating us out of OUR wages!

Wow you must have some pregnancy going on to be labeled 'disabled'. My stepson is blind, has CP and is non verbal, and I thought he was disabled....anyway, if you're well enough to consider working from home, you don't deserve disability payments from us taxpayers.

if you are in the UK - there is a new system in that you can have upto 10 (i think but maybe more) "in touch days" - whereby you can work and be paid for it as well as claiming your maternity or whatever benefit you get - it has been brought about to help new mum's keep in touch with the work place etc....
if your not in the uk sorry - that's no help at all!

good luck with your baby
xx

What would the point of disability be if you can work from home? That's cheating!

Good question, I would definitely contact your state disability dept. You don't want to get penalized in the end and end up paying extra fees.
