Well in a game, I'm thinking about creating a shop. My "staff" will give me what they want to sell, and then I will sell it for them. Once a buyer buys their item, then they get 90% of what they make, while I take the 10%. So, let's say that they're selling something for $100. Then, they would get 90% of it (which is $90) and I would get $10, which is 10% of it.

But let's say they want to make the FULL price instead of only making $90. I told them to add $10, since 10% of $100 is $10. But then when I tried to figure out 10% of $110, I got $99. How is this possible? What did I do wrong?

Hmm, this is confusing reading everyone's reply...
unfortuently, there are no decimals in this game.

@HBK: 110 divided by 10 is 11. But how does that help? That's what I got also. And if you subtract 11 from 110, you get 99. I want to get 100 instead of 99.

Actually, if they were selling the item for $110 and receiving 90% of the prophets, their take would be $99, and yours would be $11. I think you've accidentally given the buyer the 10% you are supposed to get rather than 90% and this has messed up your calculations. (i.e., 90% is $99 but that is their share, not yours).

All the best.

10% of $110 is $11. $110 - 11 =$ 99. If you figure it out any other way it should come out the same.

The thing is not to make it 10%. Have it this way: 90% is 100, find the 100%. That would be (100*100)/90 = 111.11
So, the price would have to be 111.11, instead of 110.

10% of $110 is $11, so you're taking an extra dollar.

The selling price is x. They want to make $100, you want to make x/10. So
x = 100 + x/10
→ 10x = 1000 + x (multiply by x both sides)
→ 9x = 1000
→ x = 1000/9 = $111.11

well your taking 10% from $110. thats your mistake. the 10% add on to $100 is $110. thats it. your adding 10% to a smaller number of 100 which is 10 dollars. then your taking 10% of $110 which is larger number. obviously 10% of a larger number is going to be larger. simply, taking the 10% of $100 is where the problem should end. whether you add it on or split it with the staff person. hope i helped

if u mean u wnt to find 10% (bit confused by question) then u went wrong because u go 110*0.1=11
0.1 equates to 10%
if you wnted to add 10% then 110*1.1=121
you have subtracted the 10% from the original i.e.
110*0.9=99
