Best question I've seen so far on this site. The only thing that I could think of is, the microwave is stagnating the water or in other words, removing the available oxygen. Plant roots need oxygen and the water is absorbing the o2 b4 it gets to the roots. Fact: Cold water has more available 02 than hot water.

Microwave Water Kills Plants

This is a myth , there is no chemical difference between the 2 waters. Perhaps microwaving in a plastic cup or unapproved vessel will allow toxins to leak into the water.

microwaves do weird things to salts -- i think it has something to do with the way water heats in a microwave but i have never found any mention of it other than in cooking. if you are a master of leftovers then you know can't reheat salted cooked beans in a microwave or they start to dry out again. canned beans seem to work better because they have been cooked to mush -- but if you are at home cooking until they are tender they will reverse when you reheat them in a microwave. most water contains salt and plants need trace salts to survive. the problem i have with the experiment is a plant shouldn't grow well in "purified" water (or distilled water) as it has had its salts removed. in the potted plants there should also be enough trace salts in the soil to keep the plant alive.

It does not kill plants!! The only way that microwaved water would kill a plant is if you poured it .. boiling hot on the plant.

If the water gets microwaved (regardless of how hot the water is),
it will instantly die; because it is a thin material (similar to paper), and you might put your newspaper in the fire; then it will get instantly destroyed.
