What is a spell counter?

Question

the skilled dark magician's special ability is each time you or your opponent activates a spell card, put 1 spell counter on this card (max 3). by tributing this card with 3 spell counters on it special summon 1 "dark magician" from your hand, deck, or graveyard.
Can magical hats give me the time that I need since skilled dark magician has only 1900 attack points.

A spell counter is just like a sheet of paper or something that you use to mark how many spell cards have been activated since your monster (skilled dark magician) has been summoned. It doesn't matter who uses the magic card, you or your opponent. If it is used and your monster is face up, it's counted.

Now, if something should make your magician go face down, you would have to start the counter over again when you flip him face up again.

it's exactly what the card said for example if you were to activate let's say a change of heart spell card or any type of spell card that doesn't destroy the skilled dark magician mark down one counter i usually put a penny on the card to keep track of counters but if the spell card destroys the skilled dark magician the counter doesn't count or if it flips it face down, but if you successfully get all three counter on it like it said you can summon or resurrect a dark magician for your deck,hand or graveyard that's if you have a dark magician though.
