How much water vs breast milk is a baby supposed to get? I heard that a baby is supposed to drink a lot of water too, but what is the ratio? (I am not pregnant yet, I'm just curious)

I think you got some good advice from most of your answers but I want to stress to you how important it is not to give a newborn any water.
Except for very rare exceptions your doctor will also tell you to never give very new babies water. Their tummies are only big enough to hold the nutrition of the breast milk or formula. Giving them water is like omitting a feeding since there is no nutritional value in water.

water should only be given to a baby of 6 months of age and only 1-2 ounces after a meal of starting solids. By the 7th to 8th month the baby should be drinking at least 2-3 ounces out of a sippy cup. Obviously the water increases since the solid food consumption increases.

As for breastmilk, you still need to continue to feed the baby breastmilk. The bottle consumption diminishes as the baby eats more solids, but the baby still needs the milk.

I have a soon to be 9 month old baby girl as my reference.

Everything your baby needs is provided in your breastmilk as long as you are eating a full and heathly diet. Babies may need a little cooled boiled water in hot weather or if poorly and off their milk. As they get older and start to have cups etc, encourage water as a drink as it doesn't fill them up and is better for them than sugary drinks. I found that when I offered my son water from a cup at a small age he drinks it all the time now where as my daughter doesn't because I always added orange to it!!

A baby does not need any water for the first six months. Breastmilk has the right amount of nutrients required for the baby. No extra water is really needed the first year.

Breastmilk has a high water ratio, thats probably what you're thinking of.

Babies are not supposed to take ANY water until theyre nearly a year old, and even then its only as needed according to your doctor. They get all they need from their food and formula/juice/breast milk.

Later, as your baby grows, your doctor will let you know when its time to give him/her straight water.

Breast milk breast milk breast milk !!! the milk will be more "watery" at certain times than at others - for example in warm weather - when a lil munchkin is likely to be more thirsty!
there is no need to suppliment breats milk in the first 6 months of a babies life unless advised by a medical professional.

Breastmilk should be the only thing a baby drinks for the first several months. Water only fills up their stomach and has no nutritional value for them. Maybe that's why nursing moms seem to be nursing all the time. Good question.

No you don't give a baby much water - they get all the liquid they need from milk - as they get older you can give them straight water but not at first

No, babies don't need any water until they are about 1-2 years old. Their digestive systems can't handle it. If you live in an area with high humidity then some pediatricians will ok to give babies over 6 months a couple ounces a day.
