#1 ) just do 11 1/2 ÷ 7
first turn the mixed number into fraction only.
11 1/2 = 23/2

then divide
so (23/2)/7 is the same as multiplying by 1/7
so 23/2 * 1/7 = 23/14 = 1 9/14

#2) 12 1/2 + 14 3/4
so you have 12 + 14 and 1/2 + 3/4
12 + 14 = 26
1/2 + 3/4 ---> first give them like denominators
1/2 * 2/2 = 2/4 + 3/4 = 1 1/4
now add 1 1/4 + 26 = 27 1/4

#3)12 1/2 + 36 2/3
12 + 36 = 48
1/2 + 2/3 is the same as 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6
1 1/6 + 48 = 49 1/6

#4 ) 1/5 + 3/8
first you have to make the denominators same.
1/5 * 8/8 = 8/40
3/8 * 5/5 = 15/40
8/40 + 15/40 = 23/40

#5) 3 1/2 - 1 1/6
first make them full fractions
3 1/2 = 7/2
1 1/6 = 7/6
now give them like denominators
7/2 * 3/3 = 21/6

21/6 - 7/6 = 14/6 or 2 1/3

I can measure 1 foot easily with my tape measure, but how do I measure 9/14 of a foot? 1 foot = 12 inches, so 9/14*(12in/1f)=106/14= 7 and 1/2 inches.
1'7.5" boards

12 1/2 + 14 3/4 = 26 + (1/2 +3/4)= CONVERT 1/2 TO QUARTERS 26 + (2/4 +3/4)= 26 +1 1/4 = 27 and 1/4

find the common denominator
12 1/2 and 36 2/3 both denominators will go into 6 with no remainder so, 48 + (1/2*6/6=6/12 reduces to 3/6 by dividing by 2 + 2/3*6/6=12/18 reduces by dividing by 3 to 4/6)

so 48 (3/6 + 4/6)= 49 1/6 yards
