All lizards do this. They pull some of the skin off with their mouths and eating it is a convenient way to conserve energy.

Leopard Gecko Eating

Geckos eat their shedded skin because it has extra vitamins and minerals in large amounts, that they can't really get elsewhere.
Young geckos won't eat anything like crickets or mealworms untill after thier first shed, by the way.

I actually think the guy who stated that they recycle was the one most on track. Yes, they get added nutrition from eating it but the vitamins and minerals that they get are what is needed for them to form new skin so by eating it they are in a sense recyling it, the nutrients in the skin get reused to make new skin. Sounds like recycling to me. the person above was also correct when he/she stated that hermit crabs do it too. The specific nutrients that they recycle are chitin and calcium but I am not exactly sure about what nutrients the geckos need from the skin.
