No one can ever teach themselves ballet. Certainly not with books, and not even with videos. Even professional ballet dancers still take class every day with a teacher. The reason why is that ballet is very precise and it MUST be learned correctly every step of the way. Dancers need a teacher to watch what they are doing and give corrections. Otherwise, if you continue to repeat mistakes over and over, it becomes much harder for your body to unlearn the incorrect movement. And when you consider that ballet dancers must get every single part of their bodies in the correct position, including their head, face and fingers, you might begin to understand that it's not just about what your feet are doing. Someone always needs to be watching while you're focusing on specific aspects of the movement.

well you cannot actually teach yourself ballet. unless you go to a store and get some videos on it. also pick up some books on the technique and everything. most likely you won't become an actually good ballet dancer it takes years of training and a lot of discipline. but if you are all for it, mine as well start now. good luck! you should also consider taking classes maybe from a student or a professional dancer, work your way up!

why can't you just go to a local studio? it's really hard to teach yourself ballet, and still know all the definitions of the dance steps, but the best thing you can do is watch ballet videos, and look it up on the web.

It's much like trying to teach yourself yoga.
In the beginning it's best to have someone there to correct your alignment.

But take ballet. I'm an athlete and not a dance and studied for a year and it taught me much about center of balance (and humility!)

Probably the toughest thing I ever undertook and I've undertaken much in this life.

I wouldn't try it if i were you. You could hurt yourself or end up learning something wrong. The best way to learn ballet or any kind of dance is to go to an experienced friend or a studio.
