My son is 5 years old and my friends keep telling me that he should play with dolls to help him develop a need to take care of his family when he grows up is this really needed? I don't want people to make fun of him when he starts Kindergarden next year...

No. What is wrong with you and/or your friends?

The way to keep him to be able to take care of his family is by your guidance, not by giving him toys. Discipline him with the method "everything is earned not given." not by letting him play with toys...a Barbie doll at that...

You may think he's still young and small so playing with dolls wont affect him, well you're wrong.

Ever think of playing with Barbie dolls going to be an addiction for him?

There is a difference between "allowing" and "forcing". Should you go out an buy Barbie's for you son to play with if he has expressed no interest in them--of course not. On the other hand, if he has brought it up (and American 5-year old's are well aware of the complete universe of toys advertised to them) and expressed an interest, then there is no harm in it. The best thing you can do for your child is to validate his own desires and opinions as best you can--not to manufacture or manipulate these desires for him.

Buy him a my buddy doll made for little boys or some barbie sized GI joes. Ive never heard of a little boy playing with barbies to develop need to care for family. You teach a child that by instilling in their minds how important family is and letting him hand the money to cashier at the grocery store not by playing with dolls. You don't know if allowing your son to play with dolls is gonna give him gay or perverted thoughts so i wouldn't recommend it.

no,if you care about him. boys are boys, you cannot change testosterone, what does his Dad say? but, you must care about him more than you do about yourself, and if you do care about him more than you do about yourself you will not listen to these so called"friends" on the matter of parenting your son regarding this particular issue.Bad taste and bad parenting. testosterone needs testerone to become a strong man, strong in morals, strong in ethics. i have a 4yr old son. us, we do not believe in moral relativity nor situational ethics. right is right and wrong is wrong, boys playing with barbie dolls is wrong.

Children get made fun of all of the time for any reason.
Nothing wrong with your son playing with dolls. But at some point, you may reccomend him playing with OTHER toys.

Does your son want to play with Barbies? If he does then let him; if he doesn't don't make him.
