Hi, Im a 12 year old DJ and I've DJ-ed about 7 times. I heard that many DJ's are loosing their hearing becuase of being in places with very loud music for a prolounge (sp?) amount of time. Will I loose my hearing or what do you think I should do to keep my hearing okay, but me still DJing? I considered but a Db meter to make sure my music doesnt exceed 93-100 Decibels but Im trying to find one thats really accurate and is cheap.

Hearos High Fidelity Ear Filters $12.99

These ear plugs are popular with DJs. Unlike the type of ear plugs you find in the sporting goods department, these lower the volume while allowing the full spectrum of music to pass through.

If you're not wearing ear plugs when you do your DJing gigs your career will be short lived because you will be too hard of hearing to be able to DJ.

If you are worried about image, you can spend a little more money & go to your audiologist. They make a custom fit ear plug for musicians that come in your choice of tan colored or clear. They are very discrete & not very noticeable even at close distances.

Prolonged exposure to loud sound, whether music, jackhammers, or jet engines is a sure recipe for hearing loss. You need good headphones that at least protect you from the outside sound. You don't need to turn your 'phones down to nothing, but keep the sound at about the same level as a normal indoor conversation. The idea to point the speakers away from you is also a good one.

Being proactive like this is a great idea. You're being very smart to consider this, and do something about it. If you can't afford the headphones now, talk to a parent and tell them why you want them, and offer to pay them something after each gig until they're paid for. Or else, pick out a good pair, and put them on a birthday wish list.

Yeah you should go with the headphones. I am 22 years old, I have spent a great deal of time at concerts, musical festivals and I feel as though my hearing isnt that great at all. My ex was a musician so I spent alot of time in a small room listening to them practice and write, as well as going to their shows. At work I feel like I cant hear what anyone says to me and when I am on the phone it all sounds like jargon. I dont know if all the loud music as had an effect for sure but with a big wild guess I would say yes... get headphones

I am a musician and I can tell you that unless you do something to protect your ears when you are working you will experience hearing loss. Unlike being a musician you won't have to change levels of sound (aside from maybe cranking it up) once you get your gear set up. So just get some protective hearing gear (head phones are cheap and ear plugs are even cheaper). Only take them out when you have to take a request. You will get used to working like this, but it is awkward at first.

I Djed for many years, and never lost any hearing.
