My experience was great! The first three months I experienced heavier (with harder cramping) periods than I usually did, with some ovulation cramping in my lower back. After that, my periods were slightly shorter (by a day or so), but heavier the first day or two. Other than that, I experienced no side effects and enjoyed being able to not worry about getting pregnant without using hormones.
Getting it removed did cause some trauma to my uterus; my doctor said it would take roughly a menstrual cycle for my uterus to recover, and to use condoms during that time to prevent the chance of ectopic pregnancy. I did wind up having an ectopic pregnancy, but that was because my husband and I had actually conceived before the IUD was removed; since the IUD prevents implantation instead of conception, the trauma of having it removed caused my uterus to swell enough to close off my fallopian tubes and prevent the little zygote from implanting into my uterus.
I'm planning on using it again after I've recovered from my next childbirth. I don't react well to hormones, and my husband and I don't want another child. My experience was overwhelmingly positive.

I don't have the copper IUD, I have the Mirena that gives off a low dose of hormones as well. It was very painful to put in. Sometimes sex is even painful (certain positions are better than others @ different times of the month). I haven't had a real period in years... most of my periods last 2 hours and I only need a panty liner. I haven't had any other problems with it though. I like having birth control that I don't have to think about. After all, I have my 2 girls because I couldn't remember to take a pill or put on a patch. LOL! (Don't get me wrong, my kids are BIG blessings!!! I <3 them very much!!!!!!)

I had a mirena iud in my uterus. I just had it removed in january. I only had it in for 3 1/2 years and it susposed to been a 5 year iud. The reason i had to get mine out early was because i bled for 16 days in december non stop and really bad cramping. I went to planned parenthood to get it removed and it was stuck so they had to send me to a specialist and get it taken out. So thats my experience and i do not recommend an iud to anyone, Just remember anything is possible. Just think really hard about it before you go have it done. Good luck.

I also have the Mirena one. It is the best thing I ever did. Mine wasn't too painful to put in though. The good thing about IUDs is that they can give off lower levels of hormones, which decreases just about every side effect. It is not painful to have sex either. You are not supposed to feel it ever. If you do feel it, or if your partner feels it during sex, go back in and have them adjust it or trim the string back a little.

I loved it! I have had it in for 6 years. I just got it taken out today (not due to any problems-we want to try to conceive) and removal was a breeze too.
For the first few months that it was in, I had more than usual cramps (nothing that Tylenol counldn't take care of) and heavier bleeding.
As soon as I deliver I would like to have it again.
