My font settings are at 8 but my report still requires legal size paper
but I need to shrink it to letter size (without using the xerox).
I tried the printersettings at print time to select reducing the report.
the text came out reduced but the borders and lines stay at there original settings.
Is there a command I am overlooking that will help?

Go to start.Click on control panel > printers and other Hardware. Click on Printers and faxes. Select Microsoft Document Image writer and click on printing preferences. A new pop up window will appear. Click on Page Tab, select Letter, width(8.5) and Length(11) for sizes. Then go to Advanced Tab and make sure the the MDI and comprest images are checked. clik OK and that should take care of your problem.

If using Internet Explorer and a mouse with a scroll button, hold down the control key and scroll back. The text size on web pages will get smaller. Scrolling forward increases the text size. Just move the scroll back and forth until you have the size you want!

what're you printing from? Microsoft Word or what?

The printer control panel only determines how large is the printable area, you should see the setting in the program you used for your report (like Word, for example).

In MS Word 2003 or before, you set the page Setup in File > Page Setup
In MS Word 2007 you set up the page in Page Layout > Size
In Open Office you set up the page in Format > Page
