Does anyone have an idea what was up with DH Lawerence in his short story, "The Rockinghorse Winner"?

The story is about a little boy's childhood being destroyed because of his parents' obsession with making money.

The Little Boy used to sit on his Rocking Horse and he would know the names of the horses who would win the the Grand National.
