how serious are you about playing guitar??
Is it a real love and passion in your life or just a fun passtime??
how much money do you have to spend on this guitar??
Are you paying an extra $1000 for a name or for quality that is
worth the extra $1000??
And most of all what do you think the return will be on your guitar?? And other words how much money do you think you
will be making in the next 2yrs playing the guitar??
Answer these question honestly and it should tell you which
guitar it invest in or even rather or not you should invest in a
guitar at all.

I'd rather have
$700 Yamaha Acoustic Electric
$500 Acoustic Guitar Amp w/Mic input
$100 Microphone and stand
$100 Cables and a Stool
$50 Music Stand
$100 Music
$150 Guitar and Voice Lessons
Than the $1700 Larrivee and nothing else.

I'd go with the $700 guitar. I've gotten $100 pawn shop guitars that are better and are a lot sturdier than my Martin and Taylor. If you want to be flashy, go for the Larrivee. For playing purposes grab the yamaha. I play in bars and all kinds of other places, and I would hate to lose the neck on my $1700 Larrivee when someone knocks it over or steps on it. You wouldn't have such a hard time to replace the Yamaha, and wouldn't bawl your eyes out like you would with the Larrivee.

Okay, you say it's noticeably better...Are you just trying to reason why to not spend the extra money?
I'll put it this way: Will that $1700 guitar make money for you? If so, absolutely yes.
If it's for your own hobby/ interest, how are your finances? Can they take that on and not have to make payments? Do you own on anything other than a car or home? If you have other financial commitments, bypass the more expensive guitar (for now) and pay down your debts. When they're taken care of, start *saving* for an even better guitar.
I totally want to get a hand-made instrument that is going to cost thousands. I'm paying off a car right now and since that instrument is NOT going to make me money (I'm not an employed musician), it has to wait.
That's how I make my calls and keep out of debt. : )
Cheers

If you have the money, and it is noticably better, I say buy the better guitar. One thing I have noticed about more expensive guitars (large Martins in particular) is they get better with age. So if you can notice the sound now, in a few years you will really be able to tell the difference. Also, think about what you need it for. If you are performing, a better instrument makes you sound better. If you are just starting and playing for yourself, you might not need the better instrument.

Yamaha. My main axe is still the FG-180 I bought in 1971. Played hard, played pro, still sounds better than most top end guitars.

Depends on if you are going to smash it or not... Go with the 1700 one if you want to keep it around for a very long time... and if you have the money.

Go with the Larivee. Save your money, because if you buy the Yahama, years later it's gonna starts to warp and your not gonna be happy with it and eventually go back and buy the Larivee. Look into Taylor and Breedlove too.
