pets respond through repetition. that's how they learn their names hearing it again and again

This really depends on what kind of a pet you have. If you're trying to get your dog to listen to you, then go with the positive reinforcement mentioned by that person above me. But if you're trying to get your hamster or some small pocket pet like that to sit and stay . . . it's not gonna happen. Some pets just don't have the capacity to learn like that. And actually, depending on the breed of your dog, it their amount of teachability will also vary. Dalmations, for instance, tend to be fairly slow to learn, while poodles are very smart. If I knew what kind of pet you had I could give you better advice.

Good luck

Animals only respond to two things positive and negative reinforcement (classical conditioning). Reward good behavior with food or a soft touch or rub. Negative behavior has to be quickly dealt with; negative reinforcement may include a load "NO" or maybe a squirt from a water bottle.
You have to apply this type of reinforcement consistently and you need not ever let up.

That would largely depend on what type of pet we are talking about.

Your pet apparently felt abandoned and it is letting you know this.
