I believe Constantinople or now Istanbul is its location to the sea routes of the Mediterranean.It is centrally located between Eastern Europe and the Middle East which makes it important and was valuable throughout the ages for commerce and trade. It was also a strategic point for defense of the Eastern Roman Empire and Christendom until 1453.
