To delete viruses you would have to format your disk and reinstall widows, and all your drivers and software.

Back up your data!

Before trying to format and reinstall, I Suggest you:

Run "check disk" check both options and restart. (runs a long time)
Run Disk Cleanup then Disk Defragment.

Hey Jimjo, I don't know how familiar you are with Windows XP's msconfig and Services, but oftentimes, the main problem with a system running slow (even brand new ones) is because there are so many things running in the background. You may need to upgrade your RAM, and hopefully you have - at the minimum - a Pentium-3 processor in your machine (Pent-4 would be better). I recommend to everyone they have at least 512MBs of RAM for optimal operability. Now, if you're set up on the hardware, we can move onto disabling a lot of those "RAM-Hogs".

Since it all depends on what you have connected to your PC, if it's hooked up to a network, the various software running on the machine, etc., you're going to have to do some studying before you go in there and start shutting stuff down.

I happen to have a PDF file I'd be more than happy to share with you detailing most of the Services running on Windows XP. It will be up to you to download the file and STUDY it BEFORE you do any configurations on your PC. I'm not kidding you, PLEASE read the entire thing FIRST before you make any changes!

If you only shut down, and yet shut down as much as possible, all the things you don't need, you will be amazed at how much your computer will speed up. I did an upgrade on my wife's Pentium-3 -- 1Ghz Processor -- 512MBs RAM computer from Windows ME to XP, and it dwindled down to a crawl. After going into Services, disabling what I could, setting to Manual what I could, and making the changes in msconfig I needed, her little 6 year old machine runs almost as quick as my newer one.

I'll put the link to the PDF file in the Source List below. Right-click it and Save Target As... I hope this helps you out. Oh yeah, plan on sitting there at your computer for a while. It may be dinner at the desk (LoL), but it will be worth it!

In the start menu, go to RUN
type in run: msconfig
press enter or click OK
In the new window go to the START UP tab
Here uncheck everything you don't need to run at startup, be sure to leave your antivirus and firewall running.
Most everything else can be turned off.
All these programs are running and using ram and it slows your computer drastically.
After doing this the computer will want to reboot, reboot, when your desktop screen appears there will be a new window saying you are running in troubleshooting mode, put a check in "Don't show me this again.........." and click OK.
I believe your computer will run a lot faster now, and all the programs you turned off at startup will still work fine from your incons, or in the programs list of start.

Its Virus time! You have been "given" a virus as a reward for purchasing Microsoft products, and that virus is also on the restore partition. You will likely need to reformat and reload, but you can try an undo the previous restore first.
