Like in terms of fashion and lifestyle? And as far as other labels such as goth, punk, hippie, etc?

I'm not in high school anymore, but even in our small, public high school/town we had people who were considered preppy even if they weren't. And of course by traditional they weren't really preps since it was a small, public high school of medicore or less standing. Heck even I was accused of being preppy, prep wannabe, and having preppy friends. A few of my friends were considered preppy.

yes i do! my little sister is total pothead and doesn't care at all what she looks like. she just rolls out of bed every day. but when she sees me, and i like to dress nice, she tells me i'm a prep. but i don't think that wanting to look nice and trying to act/dress mature is "preppy"

yes! Prep originated from the school term Prepatory School, which were classy private highschools. Uniforms were usually worn, and that's how polo shirts, plaids, khaki, etc. became truly preppy. Preps then, were usually he people that went to those private highschools, and were more than likely well off. They were looked at as being respectible, honest, and on the right path to a nice college and then a respectable career.
Now, Hollister and Abercrombie means prep. Both of those brands are more California Laidback Surfer, not preppy. Preps are now people that shop at those stores, rule their public schools, and might have wealthy parents, but might not. The only brands that I've seen now that are preppy and still define the look would be Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Juicy Couture, Burberry, etc.
There can be a combining of the looks California Surfer meets Prep, and usually that comes from simply wearing both types of clothing. Prep is also an attitude. They aren't snotty, no, that would just make someone a snob. Preps are respectable, certainly don't dress or act slu tty, and they might know that they're attractive, but they certainly don't flaunt it or rub it or their money in people's faces.
As for other labels, it's mostly the same. Goth and emo are now interchangeable words when they really mean two entirely differet things. They dress the same, when their 'label' says they shouldn't. All sterotypes are being molded and curved and are evolving into different meanings, that sadly don't do the original justice. Maybe for some terms like 'prep' the few people that can understand it and it's origin and keep it alive. *shrugs* Maybe.

YES! they totally are, prep is just a word that actually means happy and preppy...it is not necessarily a bad thing. I am a preppy cheerleader and I dress in Abercrombie, but I am not stuck up like other girls..they should just be called the snobby crowd..most of the time they arent even happy. They just walk around looking for someone to talk bad about and put down. They are in reality just very unhappy and insecure about themselves. The other groups go the same way..

i definitely dont think that goth and emo are the same, no interchangeable. goth people [[stereotypically]] wear only black clothes and makeup and their faces are all pale and their hair is black etc etc. EMO people [[ again, stereotypically ]] wear other colors like purple and pink along with the black. EMO [[ emotional ]] is just people who are like " oh, pity me", " My life sucks, everyone should die" and write really crappy poetry that justt reinforces everything that is said about them. its totally annoying.
i happen to be kinda inbetween groups of preps and punks and stoners and whatever. i guess im what you would call an individual. my hair is red and black. i love black, hot pink, white and purple. i wear "surfer" clothes and major labels and pretty much whatever i want to. i dont conform to any particular label, thank god.

not really. there just labels and cliques and if people dont mind bein branded as something or known as an emo, goth, prep, thug, etc. than it doesnt really matter.
