If any polyester material or thread has been used in the shirt, tehn don't do it because those parts will not dye as dark as the cotton. You might end up with a black shirt with grayish or white thread where the the buttons are or the collar area. It doesn't look good at all.

I died a polyester bathmat black. It started out as yellow. I followed the directions exactly but in the original washer cycle, I set my kitchen timer for 14 minutes. When it went off, I would repeat the wash/agitate cycle. I did this at least 10-15 times (this takes devotion).

At end of cycle, I twice ran a normal wash cycle to make sure all the black dye was removed. I never had a problem with the color running and that little bathmat lasted about 8 years (of course, all the rubber had left by the time I threw it away).

It could if directions are followed exactly and all the thread used is cotton. You will want to be sure to allow it to set in the dye bath as long as required - most washers' cycles don't last the length of time needed to make it truly black. You will have to watch and keep resetting it, or pull the timer out to stop the cycle all together. Also, be sure to add a cup of vinegar to set the color or it could run or transfer onto you if you sweat while wearing it.

My ex tried dying a pair of white coloured cargo pants dark blue, and it came out turquoise.

I wouldn't risk it, as black dyes are made up of colours like red, yellow and blue. Just buy a black shirt instead of risking it.

Looking down at Eldude's post, it may actually be a good idea. Having streaky things like jeans is fashionable...though...It would probably work better with a black shirt streaked with white.

Sure, the shirt shouldn't get ruined if it is 100 percent cotton.

I have friends who have tried to dye fabric, and it didn't come out as dark as they had expected. I would just go buy a black shirt to be on the safe side.
