You can also check the service is (computer management in control panel). Make sure that the messenger service is set to "Disabled"

If you ask me MSN Messenger is nothing but trouble, so I un-install it. You can to very easily.

Start>Run>type in " RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove " (without the quotes) and hit enter. Easy uh?

open messenger and click on the tool's button (top middle) then click options then general then un tick the first box that will stop it opening
