A new video card may do the trick, it just depends on what the exact condition is. Obviously if you are playing online games, it could be connection related. If the game loads ok, but lags during playing, it is probably memory related. If the game fails to load then I would recommend the video card which will give you a slight boost in memory too.

You might need to upgrade your RAM, which you can do yourself. Just go to crucial.com to find the RAM you need. It comes with instructions. You basically just have to attach a couple of chips inside the computer. Also, make sure your processor is of adequate speed to run the game. Sometimes it helps to restart the computer before playing, just to clear out the temporary memory. And you should use disc cleanup and disc defragmenter to clean up your hard drive. You find those under the start menu under accessories and then system tools. You should use those once a week or once every two weeks anyway.

In order to upgrade your computer to make it stop lagging, you really ought to buy a new computer, because many time, your processor cant handle all that you are doing, or there is just way to much for it to handle at one time, but if you cant do that, i suggest you upgrade your ram... thats about all you can do.

You could try buying an external hard drive, upgrading your RAM, or cleaning up all your old files. Disk Defragmentor and Disk Cleanup, free up a fair bit of memory too.
