I completely agree! I read everything, including classics. While Gone with the Wind is my favorite book of all time, there are so many great modern writers and contemporary stories. It's lame when people limit themselves because they are really missing out on some great books. Most of the classics do not beat some the more modern stories that I have read.

I happen to love the classics, however, I totally agree that there are great books by contemporary authors. I think people that don't read classics are missing out just as much at those that don't read contemporary novels. I would personally get bored if I only read from one genre. I love reading great historical fiction, then reading a mystery.

I don't believe classics are better either. Like contemporary fiction, there are some great classics and not-so-great classics. Not every modern book will appeal to readers, and not every classic book will appeal either. But I don't believe that people should limit themselves to "literary" books and scorn anything dubbed popular.
