Lets say under 16, I just saw a girl in school uniform about 12 smoking, my girls were horrified but they are 9 and 6. I hope they never do it. But if they do....?

Quite honestly, by the time a young person reaches 13 or 14, telling off and hidings do little good. They will do as they please behind parent's backs.

Keep building a positive relationship with your daughters, keep them aware of the nastiness and dangers of smoking, and they may not be tempted beyond the first trial puff.
I might add, experiementing is part of growing up, one can not protect children from everything.

Sit down with your child and tell them, why smoking is bad. Why you don't smoke. Why people with common sense, who are smart and want their lives under control shouldn't smoke. Ask them if they want to quit. Ask why they got hooked to it. Ask how long they have been doing it. Ask them if they are going through a crisis. Some of the best ways to quit smoking are- having an accountability partner, setting a date to quit smoking and a target (Say 7 days), going for professional help, if u r a heavy smoker (say a pack a day) find a less addictive substance for nicotine or shrink the number of cigarrettes you smoke a day gradually, with professional help, acupuncture and hypnosis seem to help you get out of smoking, go for counselling. Pray you never do it (again?)

My mom and dad found out my little sister smoked about a year ago. What they did was express their deep disappointment and went out of their way to make sure she knew that they didn't approve of her decision. They make her smoke outside, telling her that her clothes smelled, they refused to give her cash and bought all her clothes themselves and packed her lunches instead of giving her lunch money. My mother is an ex-smoker who smoked for 10 years so she was sympathetic. Finally, my sister quit about six months ago, deciding that smoking was stupid (and made her boyfriend quit too). Go figure. Screaming at kids about the dangers of smoking seriously doesn't work and if they make dumb decisions, you can't force them to do anything but only encourage them to do the right thing

Make them volunteer at a hospital for a week, specifically with patients with tobacco related illnesses like cancer and emphysema.

Making them smoke more or eat the cigarettes is the worst idea and sends a mixed message; "I want you to quit, but first, lets get more nicotine in your system to make it harder for you to do it."

I would buy a whole carton, not a small pack, and make him smoke it all at once. To those of you who think its mean, that's the only way kids these days will learn. Most like to learn the hard way because they don't believe you.

When my dad caught me smoking, he threatened to make me eat the entire pack. Haven't taken a drag since.

i would not tell them off straight away. I would rather talk to them first and ask "so did you like it. But you know the dangers ...... and these are the reasons that parents tell their children to stay away from cigretters."

I want to be my child's best friend. and i would like him to tell me everything he does. I would not like my son to keep things from me.
