My dr said since he has been throwing up a lot and not sleeping that well at night that this will help him. I heard from other people that his little system won't be able to digest it...is that true?

I'm surprised your doctor said this was OK. i think introducing solids this early, and with stomach problems already, would just make everything worse!

Firstly every single study shows that it does not help improve sleep. So don't count on that.

If your baby has reflux that is either a) causing the baby pain or b) cauing the baby not to gain enough weight then a very small amount of rice cereal is a possible treatment. There are potential side effects to starting cereal so young. It can increase the risk of diabetes and obesity and may cause allergies. However it is safer than most prescription drugs. BUT there are positioning and lifestyle changes that should be tried to treat reflux first. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH THAT IF THE SPITTING UP OR EVEN VOMITTING DOENS'T MEET ONE OF THE TWO CRITERIA YOU HAVE A LAUNDRY PROBLEM NOT A MEDICAL ONE.

Behavioural and lifestyle changes to treat GER:

These worked for me even though my son was throwing up stomach acid. Once we got the acid under and stopped puting him in certain positions and a certain baby carrier he was fine. He still spit up everywhere all the time but it didn't bother him and he was gaining plenty.

Safe, I don't know, but unadviseable. His digestive system is too young and there is no reason for him to have cereal at this age. He could have problems with digestion and since he is already throwing up, your doc should be trying to find out why. He may be allergic to his formula. Also, it is a myth that babies who eat cereal sleep thru the night. For the moms whose babies slept thru after starting cereal, it was just a coincidence. All 4 of mine slept thru the night @ 2 months and didn't start solid foods until 6 months.

Most doctors will tell you not to try this because of the baby's digestion system. Also, just because you give your baby a little cereal, he still may get up through the night. Maybe you should seek a second opinion from another pediatrician especially if your baby is vomiting alot.

No. It's really not.

Rice cereal will not help a baby sleep through the night, despite the ppl who claim it does. It can definitely affect his digestion. At 2.5 months he should ONLY be getting breastmilk or formula.

Rice cereal can be helpful if baby has reflux, but that can only be diagnosed by a doc.

If your doc recommend it, it will be fine! His system can handle the rice cereal. He is not too young!
My first child, 1976, the doctor scolded me for not having her on cereal, and fruits by 1 month. These days they want you to starve your child the first year.
My second child was born in 1978, she was not satisfied, still hungry after 8 oz. of formula at 7 days old. I started her on rice cereal spoon feeding her at 7 days. Not much just a few tablespoons to start. Today she is far from obese! She has just had her 6 th baby on valentines day and can almost get her size 7 jeans zipped without sucking in her gut.

if you're solely breastfeeding, your toddler does no longer favor rice cereal. you actually shouldn't commence solids until eventually 6 months- the age at which the american Pediatric Academy and international wellbeing agency recommends. With the rare pooping- it really is completely favourite with breastfed toddlers-they could pass see you later as 10 days and not using a bowel move. in accordance to la Leche League: "commercial, iron-fortified cereals are frequently the first ingredients served to toddlers who're no longer breastfeeding because they favor the more suitable iron, yet breastfed toddlers are hardly ever anemic because the iron in human milk is nicely-utilized. If there is subject about the toddler's iron degrees, an ordinary try will be performed interior the final practitioner's workplace." wish this helps. ^.^

No, it is not safe. Their digestive systems aren't mature enough for anything besides milk until they are 6 months old. It can do damage to their digestive system giving it to them that early. It also can cause them to choke.
It is a myth that has been proven false in many studies that it helps them sleep. In fact, it can make them wake up MORE if you give it to them because their little tummy is hurting from it.

There is a chance your babies doctor told you to give him cereal because of the Vomitting. He probably has Reflux. Rice cereal will help but it can cause constipationand Gas.. Try using Barley cereal.. it is less binding and easier to digest.. But 2 months of age is ok to give cereal.. He will be starting food at 3 months anyway..

Well I wouldnt give my baby cereal that soon.....its not particularly dangerous but at this age his system is really only made to digest liquides such as breastmilk or formula....and keep in mind, the longer you wait before introducing foods the better chance your baby has to avoid food allergies

Most doctors think this is too early. The baby's system is still too immature to digest this type of food.
Consider another doctor. Also sounds as if he has an allergy to the milk he's getting. Try another brand.
