It was bad for the first slaves, but if it wasn't for them, future generations would have died in Africa and not grown-up educated and bitchin' nowadays.

Well you have to look at it this way. Slavery has been going on since the begining of time. It still goes on even today.
In early times it was slaves that built the pyrmiads. We hear about this all the time and it is a part of history. There of course are more examples of these things. But too long to list.
There have been a lot of things in history that were done as a result of slaves. Would these things have happened without slaves is of course anyones guess. But I would say that probably not.
In america it was the chinese slaves who helped build the railroads for example. The black slaves took care of crops and the rich white families. This is of course a part of history now. It was also these slaves that while still slaves contributed many things to societies progress.
For an example look at george washington carver. He became a great scientest. Without him the technology for bio-diesel would not be here today. That is one of many examples.
So to answer your question I would say that slavery while still around today is not good. But what came out of those that were enslaved was. It really is amazing when you consider that even though many people and races were slaves at one time or another, many things came from those slaves that are used today. So there was good in the sense that the slaves brought forth ideas that were never known then, but in fact are used today. Just for example we would not have traffic lights if it was not for a former slave. (look it up it is black history month).
Of course this does not justify making any people a slave.

Slavery is bad. The reason that it is bad: nobody wants to be a slave.

Is slavery ever justified? What about when a person maliciously injures another, or destroys their property? The victim takes the offender to court. The court finds in favor of the plaintiff, but the offender has no money. Does this sound like justice?

In that case, I think that the person who injured to other person, needs to make amends to the injured party. If he has no money, then he needs to sell his services. I suppose that this could be considered "slavery". What do you think?

Slavery in itself was horrible as well as the discrimination that came along with it.

But it also gave the descendants of slaves a chance to grow up in a country where they would eventually have some sort of freedom (I use that term loosely).

I'd much rather be here than somewhere else.

Everyone of us answering this questions in a PC is benefiting from slave labor. We as human race never learned to build a civilization without enslaving a group of people. My PC or cell phone will cost thousands of dollars if they were built by honest, benefit earning US workers. If a kid in China didn't endure harsh lifestyle without education, you and I wouldn't be changing cell phones every year. In fact we wouldn't be owning a cell phone. The early US economy was built upon the slave's hard work who didn't get paid. From a social and humane point of view it is wrong. But from a realistic perspective, it is good. Look at your cell phone, you probably wont sit and eat with the person who made it, and yet we argue about what is right or wrong.

Even if you make the argument that decendants of slaves are better off than decendants of people left free in West Africa, it is still a gross institution. American slave owners didn't even bother to keep their end of 'the white man's burden' that they used to justify enslaving people (and it was a crappy justification even if they did live up to it).

There are some people who are suited to work and be poor, but you can't judge who fits that group by the color of their skin or where they come from. More importantly, we need a society in which the exceptional can excel, regardless of the status of their birth or racial differences.

slavery is bad.. because its wrong to take advantage of people of a different race and use them for things that they dont want to do..i mean there both people, why should one be thought of less than the other?

obviously slavery is never acceptable, however most of the major architectural landmarks would never have been completed without slavery... the great wall of china? the pyramids of Egypt? We will never again see structures of this kind or scale because of slavery being abolished

I think it turned out to be very good for the ancestors of these people. They were sold by other tribes to Americans. I'm absolutely sure it was a horrible experience for them. Luckily they were given their freedom. And so we have the ancestors of these slaves living in a very prosperous country whereas if their forefathers had not been sold unto slavery, they would still live in a 3rd world country with no real hope for a bright future

It's deplorable,
No one should be allowed to hold the reins on another human being and have that person do their bidding simply because they are told to or that the other person thinks they can "own" another human.
But I've often wondered why some of them stayed anyway even after they could go?
Not just speaking of the black slaves?
