There is a lot of material easily available in the libraries or online and the detailed answer that you want is beyong the scope of this site. However I will give some examples that will be helpful. The reason it is so important is that each thought has a certain frequency which bunches up with other thoughts of the same frequency, just like signals sent to your radio from 101.4 FM will be received by you if you are tuning your radio to that station and you will not receive it mixed with 98.2 signals. So if your thoughts are of misery and suffering, you cannot expect to receive joyous experiences. Though it sounds obvious and simplistic, you will be surprised when you begin to check it out.

Now the examples:
I think we should all join together to fight the war against hunger so that millions of children will not die of starvation. Is that positive of negative?-----NEGATIVE The result will be that the condition will either not change or it will get worse. The energy is negative. So what is the positive way? ----answer:----We should all join together to help provide plenty of food and drinking water for all who need it so they can be healthy and contribute in their way to the betterment of the world. POSITIVE---When you think and imagine this scenario you release a joyous energy through your emotional center and immediately help to make it come true.
If you have any doubts, like I also used to have, try a few small experiments. Visualize a great parking spot on your next drive to the supermarket. Out shopping for clothes?, imagine yourself finding exactly what you want on sale. The main point is to be present to your thoughts and the easiest way to do that is to keep an eye on your feelings. If you feel sad or apathetic or cynical, you cannot be thinking positive.
Another cool way to verify that this actually works is to use this principle when you speak to your friends. When one of them approaches you with negative comments, ask them to tell you how they would feel if...............(use positive imagination to describe the positive scenario). Then sit back and watch the majic. I have seen friends start to receive money that was owed them big time within 24 hours. I have seen friends who were depressed due to lack of lover but when I asked them to tell me what their dream lover would be like IN DETAIL, within a couple months attracted EXACTLY the one they described and one time the lover was attracted from Romania to California. It really was incredible. The frequency of the thought is governed by the subject of the thought and that is kind of tricky because the yes or no of it means nothing. If you think of what you don`t want you will get it. If you think of what you want and better yet imagine that you already have it, it`s a done deal. One of my friends was complaining to me that the motor in his car was shot and he had no money for another. I asked him what type of car would he prefer if he suddenly came into a pile of dough and what type of seat covers does he prefer (leather) and does he like the smell of leather? and so on. Finally I told him that he could expect to get it and it would be red...... He laughed (positive) and I went on my way. Two mornings later I stopped at his worksite to check on him because there was a brand new red Jeep parked there.
Where did you get this from? I asked. ^Oh, someone who lives near here suddenly had to go to Russia for an extended stay and asked me if I knew anyone who could use it while we are gone.^ Wow! And guess what? He immediately started to find fault with it. Well, I wouldn`t choose that model, it looks too military. Not an ounce of gratitude. Old habits die hard, they say. He is no longer in my life because I was attracted to someone positive and moved away. That also is part of it. Birds of a feather......

positive thinking means seeing the good things in everything.
for eg. if a glass is half filled with water, u can interpret it in two ways, some may say, the glass is half empty and others may say it is half full.
so, it is basically thoughts which give development, growth, happiness in a person, which have good effect on a person.
good=positive.

Now for eg. you are going for an exam or interview when you go for it you go confidently thinking success is sure for you, in so many candidates you will imagine yourself To be outstanding and there is no reason for your being not successful. this is a way of positive thinking. Bringing all sorts of good thoughts which will bring only and only success for you.

PROGRESS ,GROWTH ,CHANGE ,GOAL ARE THE KEY WORDS ONE HAS TO LOOK FOR IN ONE’S JOURNEY OF LIFE.

GET ANGRY WHEN THINGS GO WRONG PROVIDED YOU CAN CONTROL AND CONTAIN IT. ANGER IS A LUXURY AND IT COSTS MORE.
POSITIVE THINKING IS :
WHEN EDISON FAILED 1200 TIMES, HE DID NOT LOSE HEART. HE TRIED AGAIN AND HE SUCCEEDED IN INVENTING ELECTRIC LAMP. EDISON HAD A “POSITIVE ATTITUDE” AND THAT IS CALLED POSITIVE THINKING.
HAVE THE GOAL IN MIND . NOTHING CAN DETER YOUR EFFORTS TO SUCCEED.

Being Optimistic about thoughts. Even if you know deep inside that there is no hope for this thought, you'll still have that optimistic rationalization.
