I have just finished a 6 months probationary period at a company on the pretence that i would like to develop my career within it. However i have recently decided that i want to become a teacher & have been accepted on a course at university. Should I be honest & tell the company that i plan to leave in August or wait & just hand in my 4 weeks notice, nothing said? I don't want people to think i took them for a ride?

DEFINATELY DON'T TELL THEM!! Hand in your 4 weeks notice, there is no need to give a reason but to be polite, you could just be honest and say you have decided on a career change. If you tell them now, there will be an atmosphere, you may be given shitty jobs or have life made hard for you, and they may even sack you! that wont look good on a C.V. Don't feel guilty, you have done nothing wrong, it's common practice for people to make regular job or career changes. Good luck with the teaching!

I think you already did 6 months, but, do you really want to wait until august?, that is a long time anyways, and if you really want to start developing another career pathway that is not you current one, then maybe you should be honest with the company and don't make them loose any more time. Wouldn't you want honest people working for you? :)

well, was it a pretence? Or did you really mean to stay and work for them? Most decent employers will realise people may change their minds, and you do have a right to change your mind. Just be sure what your doing is right for you, and if it is then be honest - they Will probably be pleased for you if you are happy. They will give you a nicer reference if you are respectful, work hard and stay enthusiastic and professional til the day you leave, then if you lie!

I have been in a situation similiar to this myself. However, I knew my boss would fire me if I told him I was moving to England in 4 months, so I stayed, and just slacked off the last week. With office politics, and the way some employees are treated, just do your job, and don't tell them. It might really work against you....plus, if you're about to become a student again, don't you want to save enough money? Good luck.

Definitely wait - you'll have been there a year by the time you leave, which is respectable. They will understand, when the time comes, that you've made the decision to change careers, but you really don't need to tell them just yet.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to become a teacher, be a teacher. go ahead and study, if you need to hand your 4 weeks notice, then go ahead. You dont need to discuss that with anyone at your work.

If your planning on becoming a teacher its best to start telling the truth now.

I would wait then give my 4 wk notice w/ the same explanation that you would give them now. Why can't you work and go to school at the same time?

Do not be silly, you must not to explain anything to anybody if that not threatened their live or well being. You do not steal anything from them, just doing you duties. You free to change your mind anytime you want. Not all truth is good, sometimes it can harm you & others around. Do as you planed, they forgive you later if anything. Good luck!
