The right term is voir dire - It is a mini-hearing held during the trial between the lawyers and the judge concerning the admissibility of evidence. Jurors are usually excused/removed from the courtroom so that they are not able to hear the arguments and thus possibly affect their opinions/verdict. It can also be used as S.B. (below) stated.
