We need to take the square root of the square feet to get the length or side of a square of the same area.

Suppose an area of 25 square feet is given to us. If we don't know the exact shape, we can assume that it is a square and the side will be 5 ft.

Similarly a rectangle of 5 ft. by 10 ft. will have an area of 50 sq.ft.

If we have an irregular shape, we can plot it on a graph paper and then measure the length of any side etc.

They can't be converted. One is two dimensional and the other is one dimensional. You can find the square root of the area, which will give a one dimensional result, but that's quite a different thing. Any given area can be expressed as the product of an infinite number of one dimensional pairs of numbers. For example, 36 sq ft can be (6 ft)², but it can also be 4 ft x 9 ft, 3 ft x 12 ft, 2 ft x 18 ft, 1.5 ft x 24 ft, and any other pair of numbers we may care to name which when multiplied together yield 36.

Square footage is read as ft^2. Linear footage is read as ft. You need a given factor, either width or length.
