This is a very good question. The two companies both use different cellular technologies for connectivity.

Verizon uses a technology called CDMA2000 EV-DO, which allows speeds of up to 2Mbps.

Cingular uses a technology called UMTS (or more aptly, HSDPA). This allows speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps.

Additionally most of the rest of the world uses the same technology that Cingular does (which is based off the GSM standard). So, if you plan on travelling internationally using Verizon, there are many countries that you won't even be able to connect. With Cingular, you can use that internet connection virtually anywhere cellular service is located.

I have used Verizon for one year and I am a happy costumer.
I travel thru the states and I have had only pleasant surprises because my connection has all ways been good or better. I am a technician and I need to download technical manuals all the time to trouble shoot or design control systems and Verizon has been very reliable for effect.
so I can sincerely recommend Verizon against singular because in some states some of my partners have singular service and they were having connection problems with their cell phones. example is a project that we did in Columbus, Ohio.
