I am in my first year of university in northern Canada, going for my ba in English with my minor in fine (visual) arts. My dream job is to a novelist. However, I need a job to pay off my student loans and before I actually get something published. Everyone suggests teaching and then journalism. I really need help, even my academic advisor could advise me!! I was thinking about going into marketing with the writing/art side. Can anyone tell me what actually is involved in this job? Or suggest other jobs? I really need some direction because I fear I’ll end up dropping out with a ten thousand dollar dept T_T

Thanks in advance for any help!

You can do pretty much anything with an English degree. Communication skills are needed for every job ever created. Now of course they aren't going to hire you to be an engineer or a doctor or something with just an English degree, but you could do so many other things. You can sell your skills for any job you are interested in. Some may be a harder sell than others, but it is like that for most degrees. Just pick something you want to do and figure out how good communication and English skills make you the best for the job. And don't forget your analytical skills since I'm sure you'll be analyzing lots of literature in your courses.

Teaching really isn't bad. As to marketing...copywriting, editing, communications.

No offense, but shouldn't you have asked this question before you spent 10,000 dollars on your education?
