If you turn off your main power to your home, ALL out lets and switches should have no power to them. If you test each out let and or switch and you find that you have power. You need to have your main panel check by a Electrician.

REMEMBER!.. Safety First.

Unfortunately not all breaker boxes are alike. I prefer the kind that clearly have a "main" breaker that kills everything from the box outward.

However, my home has the "Main" breaker in the middle. That kills all of the breakers below it. But the 240V ones above and across are still live until they too are shut off individually. The home was built in the '70's and I guess that met code in South Jersey then.

Anyway, they sell an AC detector that can sense 120 volts and up without even having to touch metal. It's about $9 in the hardware store. Turn it on and check that it works and the battery is good. The kill the power and check the wires coming out of your breaker box with this device - you only touch the plastic tip to the insulation and it will light an buzz if there's power present. Only your main power feed (largest cable usually) will have power and it is coming from your meter.

yes everything will be off and if for some odd reason you find something is on you have a serious problem and you will need to call a electrician. Make sure when you change out your devices your connections ate tight and if you come across any damaged wires tape them up with electrical tape. Bad connections are the main cause of electrical fires.

Once the main switch is off, all the power is off.
You can easily check that by trying to turn on lights and appliances.
I do most repairs without even switching off the individual circuit breaker, but would NOT advise that to a novice. ;-)

The best way to check to see if there is current at any point is to use a voltage meter. Never trust that all electricity has been turned off! Check continually , never "assume".
