The only definitive way to know if a fracture occurred, is to have an x-ray done. You can apply heat to the injury to help relieve pain. Use a warm heating pad, whirlpool bath, or warm, moist towels. You can use over-the-counter pain-killers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen. If you are having problems breathing, then you need to see a doctor for evaluation.

Usually, fractured ribs indicate soreness which increases tenfold with movement, taking a deep breath, coughing, sneezing..even rolling over in bed..the pain can be similar to a knife-like stabbing sensation in the sensitive region. An xray is the only real way of diagnosing a definite positive for rib fracture. Sometimes a fractured rib can actually poke into a lung, causing severe shortness of breath & lowered oxygen levels in the body.
This fractured rib can cause a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) & intervention by use of chest tube drainage can help to establish the negative pressure back in to the lung to allow you to breath again with ease. The cartilage that attaches to the rib allows the chest to expand & contract with each breath. When fractured, it's very painful so people have a tendency to breathe very shallow. If deep breathing isn't done inspite of the pain, a person can be predisposed to pneumonia. Smoking can increase one's chances for pneumonia when there is fractured ribs. Hope this helps...good luck!

I usually recommend it takes from 6 to eight weeks. the project with ribs is that we gained't immobilise them. Years decrease back they was once strapped, besides the incontrovertible fact that this guidance became discontinued while it became chanced on that, by way of fact it would not enable the lungs to fill and empty exact, it greater advantageous the prospect of a secondary pneumonia. I many times recommend a mix of an NSAID like diclofenac, provided there is not any contraindication, and an further painkiller, paracetamol if the soreness is gentle, and tramadol whether that's greater extreme.

Go to the hosp - get it checked - You may just have bruising - better to be safe than sorry - They can't really do much but tell you to rest, not lift anything heavy

Oooooh ... been there and done that. Get yourself to your nearest hospital A&E or Walk-in Centre. Sounds like it's either broken or cracked - I'm betting cracked.
